EBHA BEST PAPER PRIZE (BRUSSELS 2025)

Since 2009, the European Business History Association (EBHA) has awarded a prize for the best paper on European business history presented at its annual congress. The prize consists of a certificate and €250 in cash. The winner will be announced at the gala dinner held during the annual congress. If you want to apply for the Best Paper Prize of this year’s EBHA conference, please send your conference paper highlighting „EBHA BPP 2025“ in the header by 15 June to the following email-address Jan-Otmar.hesse@uni-bayreuth.de

A Lens for Tackling Sustainability Challenges

The European Business History Association (EBHA) is pleased to announce its Annual Meeting to be held in Brussels, Belgium, in 2025. We invite scholars from across the globe to submit papers that explore the theme "Business History: An Approach to Understanding Sustainability Challenges." This conference aims to broaden the discourse around sustainability by encompassing economic, social, and environmental dimensions within the historical context of business practices.

Cyrus Mody (C.C.M.)

Cyrus Mody has been Professor of the History of Science, Technology, and Innovation at Maastricht University since 2015. Prior to this, he was a member of Rice University’s History Department (2007-2015) and served as a program officer at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (now the Science History Institute) from 2005 to 2007. His research focuses on the history of academic entrepreneurship, semiconductor R&D, innovation policy, and other topics at the intersection of business history, science, and technology.Cyrus Mody is currently the Principal Investigator of Managing Scarcity, a Dutch Research Council-funded project examining the oil industry’s involvement with alternative energy and environmental governance during the long 1970s. He is also co-Principal Investigator of the European Research Council Synergy project NanoBubbles, which investigates how institutions and markets can foster error, exaggeration, denialism, and fraud in science.

The collaboration within ULB for organizing the Congress is reflected in the use of different spaces across the Solbosch campus, taking full advantage of its diverse facilities. Brussels Airport (Zaventem) is well-connected with international flights. The distance between the airport and the main city campuses is approximately 15 km. Depending on the destination, the journey to various institutions in Brussels, such as ULB or VUB, typically ranges between 10 and 20 kilometers.

From Brussels Airport (Zaventem), take the train to Brussels Central Station. The journey takes around 20 minutes and costs approximately €11. From the station, you can take bus 71 (direction Delta), which goes directly to ULB. You can also book a ride with Taxis Verts, which offers flat-rate fares from the airport to the city centre of Brussels. Alternatively, you can use Uber or Bolt. The trip takes approximately 20–30 minutes, with prices ranging between €20 and €30 depending on traffic.

From Charleroi Airport (Brussels South), take the shuttle bus to Brussels Midi Station. The journey takes about 1 hour and costs around €17. From Brussels Midi, transfer to metro line 2 or 6 (direction Simonis or Elisabeth), and get off at Louise. From there, take tram 8 (direction Roodebeek) and get off at the ULB stop. The total journey time is around 1 hour and 30 minutes. By Uber or Bolt, the journey to the Solbosch campus takes approximately 45–60 minutes, with prices ranging between €60 and €80, depending on traffic.

All participants are strongly advised to book their rooms as early as possible to benefit from special rates offered to Congress attendees. Given that Brussels attracts many tourists, especially during the summer months, the city offers a wide range of hotels.
